Solstice, the brand new addition to the Celebrity fleet, has finally arrived and the only word to describe her Is phenomenal!
I was lucky enough to be invited to Miami to see her first-hand and what an experience it was. Solstice is 122,000 tonnes and there will be five ships in the class, Solstice, Equinox, Eclipse and a further two yet to be named. The moment I stepped onto the ship I knew she was going to be something special. The public areas are spacious and this feeling is enhanced by tranquil lighting. The pedestrian traffic flow through the ship works incredibly well. There is an amazing choice of bars, lounges and eating options. As you’d expect, there is, the usual high standard main restaurant and the casual buffet style Oceanview cafe. There are also four specialty restaurants: Silk Harvest serving Asian cuisine, Tuscan Grille steakhouse, Murano French cuisine and Blu.
Although they all carry a surcharge they’re well worth trying for something different or for a special occasion.
The Blu restaurant is reserved primarily for guests staying in AquaClass cabins. These are ideal for those looking for that little extra bit of peace, quiet and luxury. To tell you the truth, I find it hard to express how good the food and
service is in the Blu restaurant. On top of this, AquaClass guests also have their own spa area, The Persian Garden, with its steam rooms and aromatherapy this makes this grade of cabin great value.
Entertainment was also great with so many different options from seven-piece bands to steel drums. The shows are definitely state of the art and have great variety. They range from Broadway one night to a modern, breathtaking acrobatic and balance show the next. There were people flying through the air all over the place! One of my favourite areas was Celebrity Central.
This is a smaller auditorium with a small stage which offered stand-up comedy. This was a great new innovative idea and it was always packed. Then there is the Quasar nightclub, where you can dance till the small hours. There was literally something for everyone. There is just so much to do on board it’s hard to remember everything. Croquet anyone? Or boules at the lawn club – yes, it is real grass.
Relax in the spa, energize yourself in the gym, fill up in the cr

Having just returned from our first Celebrity Cruise aboard the Celebrity Century and I wanted to post a review that hopefully others can benefit from it.
Some background on our cruising experience. This is our 6th cruise we have taken in the last 20 years so by no means are we what you would call experts. Nor would you call us rookies either. In the past 20 years we have cruised with Royal Caribbean, Disney, Carnival and Holland (twice). We have been also fortunate enough to attain a financial level where the last 3 cruises have been at the Suite level.
We booked the Celebrity Century out of Miami Florida, as we wanted to take a New Years Eve Cruise. A word of caution if you are looking to take a cruise over any New Year you will want to book very early. For example, the first week of October there were several options on several cruise lines. In the second week of October most all of these choices we gone.
We left the port of Miami on December 30th 2009 and returned January 4th, 2010.
The Good:
In November of 2009, Celebrity launched several “all you can drink” options. These include:
- Water
- Beer
- Frozen Drinks (margarita’s; daiquiri’s, etc)
- Alcohol (house alcohol)
There were four of us in our party and we purchased one water card and one beer card for the four of us. I cannot recommend these cards enough. On the water you get your choice of Evian stilled and Perrigrino Sparkling. You get bottled water at no charge at every bar, every restaurant and all day everyday. These are not the small bottles either – these are the large bottles of water all the way to the 1.5 liter size. During dinner we easily went through 5 bottles a night.
The same goes for the beer card. The beer card gives you every can or bottle of beer at no charge. This includes both domestic and imports. To make the math work on a beer card you need to drink about 6 beers per day. You can only order one beer at a time, but on the pool deck there are 4 bars in the immediate vicinity. At first we simply each took my card to each different bar and ordered a beer. Then one of the waiters came over and asked told us that we did not need to come to the bar because he would make the bar “come to us”. I then told him we were looking for some good service and slipped him a $20 in his pocket. That was it – we never had to make another “beer run” the rest of the cruise. Regardless of the number of beers we wanted – he brought them over and put them on the free card. On every cruise you should always tip your waiter early in cash and I promise you that you will get better service than you ever have had in the past.
A note on tipping. At first I felt a little guilty when the bartender or waiter gave me a bottle of water or beer and the charge slip had zero, but a spot for additional tip. Then I remembered that Celebrity had had 15% to the cost of the card for the gratuity. In essence the gratuity on these drinks was pre-paid.
Also remember to double check your charge slip to make sure the waiter did not charge you. We did have 3 separate incidents where the waiter inadvertently charged us. The good news is as soon as we pointed it out they reversed the charge.
A more professional cruise experience? The cruise on the Celebrity Century felt like it was designed for the more seasoned cruiser. It is highly likely that what I am about to describe is common through out the Celebrity Cruise Line, but since this is my one and only cruise with Celebrity, I can not say this for certain.
Compared to all of the other cruises I have experienced, I never felt “sold to”. Unlike other cruises there was not the constant announcements about a jewelry sale, art auction, bingo game, etc. Our mail box / cabin was also not littered with flyers and coupons reminding us of the same. It was a nice break. This is not to say that Celebrity did not keep us informed about what was happening aboard the Celebrity Century. There were occasional announcements and of course the daily itinerary of events was delivered to our cabin nightly. But if you waited to be told what to do next aboard the Celebrity Century you would have missed out on various activities.
Jamaican Waterfall: This was an excursion in Ocho Rios. If you have the physical ability you should not pass this up. Basically you climb UP a 650′ waterfall. They have guides to take you up the waterfall safely. It is a true one of a kind experience.
The Bad and the Ugly:
Room size: As mentioned earlier we have been blessed with the ability to cruise with a suite the last 3 cruises. 2 aboard Holland and this one on the Celebrity Century. The suite was less than 1/2 the size of a similar suite about Holland and the bathroom was about 1/3rd the size. We traveled with 3 pieces of luggage. One of the pieces would not fit in the bed or in the closet. The room attendant / butler had no alternatives so for 5 days it sat out. So you take a small room to start with and now have a piece of luggage to maneuver around for 5 days.
The Bed: I have slept on more comfortable beds in a college dorm. The are very flat. Even worse was the length. At 6′3′ my feet easily hung over the edge of the bed. I spoke with a gentleman who was under 6′ tall and he said he had the same problem. He was not in a suite so the bed length must correspond with the type of room. My assumption is the beds were short to allow people to walk around them.
Recycling: Non-existent. In this day of being green this was a huge shock and disappointment. Aboard Holland there is a recycling trash can in every room. Not aboard the Celebrity Century. The good news is they gave you less paper to throw out in terms if coupons and flyers, but there is still a good amount that could be and should be recycled. I definitely look on this a negative towards Celebrity Cruise Lines vs. the Celebrity Century. The age of a ship should not dictate whether or not you offer recycling.
The Buffet: The food that was offered was more than plentiful and the quality was fine. However, in the evenings the menu remains the same. If for whatever reason you did not want to eat in the main dining room – the choices were:
- Create your own pasta
- Stir-Fry
- Sushi
- Pizza
It NEVER changed. All of the above is also available at lunch. I have never been on a cruise and have had this experience. I can tell you that about Holland whatever they offer in the main dining room is also offered in the buffet line / cafe.
The Murano: Like all other cruise lines, Celebrity Cruises offers a higher end restaurant you can enjoy for a fee. This fee usually ranges from $25 to $35 per person. Celebrity advertises the Murano as an Italian Theme. It is not like any Italian I have ever seen. For example, I have yet to be offer Fuqua (stuffed goosed liver) in any other Italian restaurant. I would call it a mish mash of French, Italian and seafood. The issue I have with the Murano is not the food but the charge. The left hand of the menu is a 5 course food and wine course. At the bottom of the menu it says there will be an $89 charge if you order this meal!
So with Celebrity you can have higher end within higher end? It is one thing to offer a higher end dining experience aboard an expensive trip already, but to then want to charge an additional $89 for a menu selection is absurd. The night we were there we saw no one order the 5 course meal so I wonder why it is really offered. Perhaps they want to limit the offerings in the Murano and this is a way to do it while still making their menu appear full.
7 Mile Beach Excursion – Grand Cayman: Some might say this is not fair to hold this against Celebrity Cruise or include in a review about the Celebrity Century, but I am well aware that the cruise lines keep a significant portion of the money travelers pay for excursions booked through them. Celebrity Cruises is well aware of what they are charging for.
The 7 Mile Beach Excursion in Grand Cayman is without a doubt the biggest rip-off for an excursion I have ever experienced. For $35 you get:
- Shuttle bus trip to the 7 Mile Beach (public beach)
- 1 free drink (watered down rum mixed with Kool-Aid in small plastic cup)
- 1 lawn chair
And what do you get to experience when you get to the beach? Water, sand and sun! Want an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun? $5 please.. Want to jet ski, parasail, snorkel, etc – better bring your credit card!
For the 4 of us it cost $140 for the above 10-minute bus ride, drink and use of a lawn chair. Take the city bus to the same beach – $2.50 per person. Take a cab ride from the dock to the same beach – $5 each! I understand that in any situation it is buyer beware and you want to be safe on your vacation. There is no amount of money that is worth having my family safe. However in this situation where there is such a disparity in value received versus what the normal fees are – it can be called nothing less than highway robbery. Shame on you Celebrity Cruises for offering this so-called excursion at this price.
Conclusion:
I am sorry to say that I have to conclude my Celebrity Century review saying that the bad and the ugly far outweighed the good on the Celebrity Century. Celebrity does note that the Century ship is the oldest ship in their fleet, but it did have a multi-million dollar upgrade in 2006. Unfortunately what we found disappointing about the cruise had almost nothing to do with the Celebrity Century but rather Celebrity Cruises as a whole. When we got to the airport we took a vote on Celebrity and it was unanimous – none of us will probably be cruising in Celebrity Cruises again.

While most of us are wondering if it’s safe to fly in today’s world or weather we want to jump the hoops just to catch a plane, celebrities are jet setting around the globe racking up miles on celebrity private jets.
Tony Blair enraged environmental groups when he said he was not about to give up long haul flights. Even though the amount of emissions that the airline contributes to green house gasses is very small environmentalists feel it as important part of cutting out carbon emissions. While some of us may be thinking twice about whether we should fly for what ever reason the celebrities are jumping on their celebrity private jets.
Donatella Versace is so wealthy it’s almost impossible to comprehend and with that wealth comes a very luxurious celebrity jet for which going green means the color choice for this seasons runway. Donatella will continue to enjoy those leather sofas and fine wine as he jet sets around the world.
Tom Cruise has been nick named “emissions impossible.” After all here is a man that takes celebrity private jets to heart owning three of his own. In fact it’s been reported that he sent one of his private jets out to pick up some organic veggies. Must be nice!
John Travolta leaves the larges carbon footprint of any of the stars with his Boeing 707 parked on his front lawn beside his Lear and Gulfstream. No wonder he calls his home Jumbolair. He’s got more than 5000 hours logged as a pilot. Oh well at least he was quick to help out with Hurricane Katrina.
Simon Cowell is a man that enjoys his lifestyle and is not about to apologize fore it. He loves the champagne and there is not a no smoking sign hanging in his face.
Phillip Green is a billionaire who owns more than 2,500 stores. He avoids the tax man by living in Monaco but has no problem contributing his share or carbon to the atmosphere traveling almost daily between London and Monaco in his Gulfstream. The irony is that Topshop a chain of stores he owns promotes the “highest environmental standards.” I guess what’s good for the gander is not always good for the goose.
Roman Abramovich governor of an eastern Russian province and even though his province might be struggling he certainly is not with daddy’s celebrity private jets which include a Boeing 767 that would normally seat 180 people. The renovation itself cost millions but wow! now you get enjoy giant plasma screens, beautiful mahogany and walnut furniture accented with real gold. This is really a jet for billionaires.
Michael O’Leary is the number one environmental enemy. He will proudly declare he intends to increase his carbon emissions by purchasing more celebrity private jets. He argues the airline only contributes 2% to the world’s carbon emissions and that there are bigger fish to fly.
Celebrity private jets are not about to leave the skies soon in fact you are likely to find more of them rather than less regardless of concerns for the environment and carbon emissions. Heck if you’ve got it – use it – you only live once. And if you really want to get down to the environmental issues industry is where we might begin!

Where would you stay if you wanted to go on a holiday? Chances are that you have all the freedom in the world to go wherever you wish and to stay wherever you choose. It’s highly tempting to look at celebrities and wish you could walk in their shoes for a day, but you can bet that they would give anything to walk in yours when they’re on holiday. That’s simply because celebrities have to take extra precautions when they want to get away from the world. First there’s the question of how to get to the vacation spot (in most cases, its either by a private plane or yacht) and then there’s the bigger worry of how to slip away without getting noticed by the paparazzi who just won’t let them be.
So, it’s no wonder then that celebs often splash huge money for a holiday, but more than anything it’s the privacy that they are willing to pay anything for. After all, looking glamorous all the time can get weary and everybody needs to let their hair down sometime! Renting a private home or villa, staying at the home of a wealthy friend or even hiding away in a luxury yacht are a few of the best options. Some celebs have no problems with staying in one of their own hotels or getaway resorts either. However, since where they stay often makes headlines; the first choice of most celebs is to stay in some of the most expensive hotels around the world. So unless you can really afford to burn a gaping hole in your wallet, how about dining at celebrity frequented restaurants?
London is one of the best cities for celeb spotting. Zuma, which offers the best in Japanese cuisine is a much loved haunt of Lady GaGa and model Kate Moss. Or if you prefer something more English, then Julie’s Restaurant which has served the rich and famous for over 30 years is renowned for its yummy European food. Nobu, another Japanese restaurant is famed for its fresh sushi and fusion cuisine making it a popular hangout of actors like Brad Pitt. Food lovers recommend the chocolate bento boxes here as well. Or, if you plan to holiday in the city that never sleeps, you’d be surprised to know how often celebs can be spotted at many of the city’s best known restaurants. For instance, places like Balthazar’s in Soho are frequented by the likes of Bill Clinton and other movie stars. Le Cirque in Midtown literally gives you a chance to rub shoulders with the rich and famous because tables are often placed quite close to each other. Or lunch at the Four Seasons Grill Room in Manhattan, where you’re likely to spot big names in the business world and a fashion designer or two.
If there’s one thing people in the cities agree with, it would be that the best way to meet celebs is simply by keeping your eyes open- they could be walking their dog, enjoying a Subway, driving or jogging; just like any one of us.

With a premium fleet that’s among the youngest and best designed in the cruise industry, Celebrity Cruise Alaska offers a great product: a classy, tasteful, and luxurious cruise experience at a moderate price.
Celebrity Cruise Alaska Pros
o Spectacular spas and gyms. Beautiful to look at and well stocked, the spas and gyms on the Infinity, Mercury, and Summit (and Celebrity’s other non-Alaska megaships) are among the best at sea today.
o Fabulous food. Celebrity’s cuisine is tops among mainstream cruise lines.
o Innovative everything. Celebrity’s entertainment, art, cigar bars, service, spas, and cuisine are some of the most innovative in the industry. Its ships were among the first in the industry to display major art collections on board, it had one of the earliest cigar bars, and its menus have long recognized the need for vegetarian, low-sodium, heart-conscious, and other dishes.
Celebrity Cruise Alaska Cons
o Occasional crowding. Pack a couple thousand people onto a ship (pretty much any ship), and you’ll get crowds sometimes, such as at buffets and when debarking.
Each of the Celebrity ships is spacious, glamorous, and comfortable, mixing sleekly modern and vaguely Art Deco styles and throwing in an astoundingly cutting-edge art collection. The line’s genteel service is exceptional: Staff members are exceedingly polite and professional, and contribute greatly to the elegant atmosphere. Dining-wise, Celebrity shines, offering innovative cuisine that’s a cut above the fare offered by all the other mainstream lines.
The AquaSpas on the line’s mega ships are the best at sea, the art collections fleet wide are the most compelling, the cigar bars are the plushest, and the onboard activities are among the most varied. Like all the big ship lines, Celebrity Cruise Alaska offers lots for its passengers to do, but its focus on mellower pursuits and innovative programming sets it apart.
It’s interesting to note that this year Celebrity (and its affiliate company, Royal Caribbean International) are using a brand new port, Icy Strait Point. The port, little more than a cannery dock to be honest, lies between Juneau and Glacier Bay and offers a prime vantage point for whale and wildlife watching and easier access to the Alaskan wilderness. A small Indian village about a mile away will be included on shore excursions.
Why add the stop at all? Simply because a growing number of Alaska passengers have begun to outgrow the historic ports of call. A “been there done that” attitude among past guests has made it essential that cruise lines find new ways to stimulate public interest in the destination. Hence, Icy Strait Point. It will never make passengers forget the bustling streets and stores of, say, Juneau or Ketchikan, but the lines are hoping that the combination of hitherto pretty much unseen (at least by cruise passengers) wilderness and exposure to a real Indian village experience will make it a memorable stop.

Spending a vacation aboard one of the Celebrity Cruise ships promises to be a luxurious experience considering that they are one of the best high rated ships in the world. They have luxurious suites, spas and world-class restaurants that guarantee a different gastronomical experience. They also offer endless possibilities for fun and excitement wherever you choose to go. However, all these may not come true if you don’t plan and book a trip properly.
The first thing you should consider in booking for a Celebrity Cruise ship vacation is the destination you want to go to. There are over nine destination offered by this shipping line, each offering a distinct experience, climate and adventure. Usually, the destinations offered are Alaska, Australia, Caribbean, Europe, Galapagos, Hawaii, Panama Canal and Transatlantic. If you haven’t been on a cruise before, it will be worth doing a research on each destination to know which one you will suit your tastes.
After choosing a destination, the next thing you will check is which Celebrity cruise ship is scheduled for that destination. There are nine ships on this shipping line and each has a different destination schedule. One way of finding out which ship is bound for your chosen destination is checking their website, their travel agents or your travel agent.
Knowing when and how to book your vacation is also as important as choosing where and on what ship board. If you are comfortable using the online booking, then booking can be done on the website. If not, you can call either their office or a representative nearest your location. Booking with their agents also offer some advantages as booking anywhere else as they are usually more updated and knowledgeable.
Aside for booking the trip, you may also want to consider booking shore and land excursions. This ship line offers a variety of escorted tours such as those to the Easter Island on Chile, Outback Australia, cathedrals in Europe and the Mediterranean, and Canadian Rockies. It will be best to check what tours are available for your chosen ship. And if you decide to go on one, be sure to book four days before your scheduled sailing for online booking. Otherwise, you will have to book aboard the ship.
Lastly, know any policies that the ship may have prior to sailing day or booking to avoid surprises. For instance, you may want to check smoking policies. Usually, a no smoking policy is imposed inside land transportation during land tours. There are also designated areas for smoking on the ship and smoking anywhere else is prohibited.

The Celebrity Mercury is one of the older ships in the Celebrity fleet. This line of cruise ships have been admired by experienced and first time cruisers alike. Built in 1997 this is an impressive ship, not just in the amenities that it offers but also in the visual appeal and the classic look.
The rooms have more than adequate space for clothing and other luggage and the service is world-renown. The first thing that you will notice when you enter the ship is the grand foyer on the promenade deck. From there you can make your way up to the entertainment deck, another of the eleven decks on this relatively small ship. If you are into small and intimate settings on your cruise then this one is definitely for you.
For your shipboard entertainment, the Celebrity Mercury features the Celebrity Theater in the front of the ship and the Pavilion Night Club in the rear. The Celebrity Mercury has all the attractions of a large size ship such as a casino, a large shopping terrace, the library and even a Martini Bar. The main dining room is supplemented nicely by the ample lido deck buffet and the additional dining rooms.
As a general rule, you cannot go wrong with Celebrity cruise lines. This is a five-star fleet with a jazzy upscale feel. I personally really like smaller ships. I think that the service is better and the passenger per gross tonnage of the ship is often better than the larger ships.
The Celebrity Mercury has all that and more. A first-class cruise and an outstanding experience overall.
